The Marcadau refuge, nestling in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park, welcomes hikers in summer and winter alike for a simple, unforgettable break.
A 2.5-hour walk from the Pont d’Espagne, this hike takes you to the refuge along the Gave du Marcadau, between hooked pines, waterfalls and the surrounding high peaks.
A timeless night at the Marcadau refuge
At the end of the path, the refuge appears, surrounded by mountains.
Inside, the atmosphere is warm and friendly. At 7pm, the meal is served in the large dining room: steaming soup, shared laughter and hiker stories. We pull out a pack of cards, catch up on old times and simply enjoy each other’s company.
The shared rooms offer simple comforts, cosy bedding and, above all, a breathtaking view over the Marcadau valley.
Early in the morning, the refuge gently awakens. The sun is shining on the peaks, the coffee is steaming and the day can begin. It’s hard to imagine a better way to wake up in the mountains.

There are two options from the refuge:
- Take a leisurely stroll back down to the Pont d’Espagne, your heart still light and your head full of memories.
- Continue on to the lakes of Nère, Pourtet and Embarrat, a more demanding but absolutely spectacular loop to do in summer.
