The Marcadau valley is one of the most emblematic in Cauterets.
Accessible from the Pont d’Espagne, it offers a vast area for hikers and nature lovers to explore.

The main path winds its way up the valley alongside the Gave du Marcadau, crossing the Clot and Cayan plateaux, before continuing its ascent towards the refuge du Marcadau (Wallon).
The route leads through beautiful forests of hooked pine, before arriving on a wide, open plateau, ideal for enjoying the fresh air amidst high peaks.

A valley to discover all year round

The Marcadau valley can be explored in all seasons:

  • In spring and summer, the open paths make it easy to reach the refuge or the surrounding lakes.
  • In autumn, the forests take on a golden hue,
  • In winter, the valley becomes a popular area for snowshoeing and Nordic skiing, with signposted routes from the Pont d’Espagne.

Whatever the season, the Marcadau valley remains a must for enjoying the great outdoors in Cauterets.

Hike to the Marcadau refuge (Wallon)

From the Pont d’Espagne, it takes around 2 hours 30 minutes to walk to the Marcadau refuge, at an altitude of 1,865 metres.
The route is pleasant, well signposted and accessible to most walkers.
On arrival, you can enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Gave or take a break at the refuge.

The Wallon refuge is one of the largest refuges in the Pyrenees. Completely renovated, it offers comfortable accommodation in dormitories and a catering service (meals, snacks, drinks). Designed with eco-responsibility in mind, it is self-sufficient in energy thanks to solar panels and a small hydroelectric power station. It’s a friendly place, popular with families as well as hikers on the GR10 or the Haute Route Pyrénéenne (HRP).

Ideas for hikes from the refuge

From the refuge, there are numerous hiking trails to explore. We recommend that you bring an IGN map and seek the assistance of mountain professionals (guides, PGHM, etc…).

Tour of the lakes

A not-to-be-missed loop in the area, linking lakes Nère, Pourtet and Embarrat. Each lake offers a different atmosphere and spectacular views.

The Cambalès lakes

A wilder, less-frequented route, accessible from the refuge. The well-marked path leads to a series of high-altitude lakes in an unspoilt mountain setting.
