When summer sets in and temperatures rise, the mountains become the perfect place to escape the heat.

REGULATIONS FOR THE PYRENEES NATIONAL PARK
Since 15 June 2026, the regulations within the core zone of the Pyrenees National Park have changed. A new prefectural order prohibits swimming in the mountain lakes and ponds located in the core zone of the Pyrenees National Park. These new regulations aim to preserve water quality and all the fragile ecosystems of the lakes.
Places to cool off in the mountains: by the mountain streams and torrents
In Cauterets, the mountain streams and torrents flowing down from the peaks offer plenty of spots to take a refreshing break. Sometimes, all you need to do is sit by the water’s edge or dip your feet in to fully enjoy its benefits.

The Fruitière Valley
Located a few kilometres from the village, the Fruitière Valley is one of the most popular places to enjoy the cool summer air. The Gave du Lutour, which flows through the valley, winds its way through the trees and offers plenty of places to stop during a stroll or after a hike.
The shade of the pine trees and the sound of the water create a particularly pleasant atmosphere on the hottest days.
The Clot and Cayan Plateaus
Just a few minutes from the Pont d’Espagne,
The Clot plateau is a real haven of coolness in summer. Criss-crossed by small streams and surrounded by vast meadows, it offers a peaceful setting even on the hottest days.
Easily accessible for families, it’s the ideal spot for a family walk, a picnic in the shade or simply a relaxing moment by the water’s edge. Continue your walk and head towards the Cayan plateau.


The Marcadau Valley
The Marcadau Valley is crossed by its fast-flowing stream, which accompanies walkers throughout the route.
With footbridges and shaded areas along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the cool air all the way to the foot of the mountain hut.
The Cambasque Valley
Just a few minutes from the centre of Cauterets, the Cambasque Valley offers a quick escape to cooler surroundings.
Follow the footpaths along the banks of the Gave du Cambasque and through the woodland to enjoy a pleasant sense of coolness all summer long.

Places to cool off in the village
The swimming pool
What if you fancy a swim or a few lengths? The swimming pool in Cauterets is a great option after a hike or on a warmer day. It features a 25-metre indoor pool, a paddling pool for children, a water slide and an outdoor pool, so you can make the most of your visit whilst staying cool.


The Rock Baths
To round off your day’s hiking with a bit of pampering, head to Les Bains du Rocher.
This thermal spa offers a unique experience in the thermal waters, relaxation areas and views of the surrounding peaks from the outdoor pool.
