Compulsory winter equipment

Since 1 November 2021, winter chains or tyres have been compulsory in mountain areas.
To access Cauterets, cars, commercial vehicles and motor homes must therefore :
either have removable anti-skid devices to equip at least two driven wheels (metal chains, hybrid chains, textile chains or snow socks), or be fitted with four winter tyres suitable for driving on snow-covered roads.

Please note: since 1 November 2024, tyres marked M+S (Mud + Snow) are no longer sufficient.
Only 3PMSF(Three Peak Mountain Snow Flake ) tyres are recognised as equivalent to chains.
Other snow tyres are still permitted, but drivers must carry chains on board.
The 3PMSF marking guarantees genuine winter performance, validated by a standardised European snow traction test.
4-season tyres bearing the 3PMSF marking are also accepted.
