In Cauterets, the Chemin des Cascades is an iconic walk that allows you to explore the valley amidst the sounds of flowing water and the forest. Accessible and largely shaded, this trail runs alongside the mountain stream and offers a succession of spectacular waterfalls in an unspoilt natural setting, in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park.
To protect local wildlife, dogs are not permitted on this route.
A route between La Raillère and the Pont d’Espagne
The trail links La Raillère to the famous Pont d’Espagne. Along the way, six waterfalls punctuate the walk, offering a refreshing and relaxing experience in the heart of the Pyrenean countryside.
At every turn, the path winds through forests and over footbridges, revealing breathtaking views of the waterfalls and surrounding peaks, until it reaches its spectacular finish at the Pont d’Espagne.
A walk suitable for everyone
Easy, well-maintained and a pleasure to walk along, the Chemin des Cascades is ideal for a family outing or a leisurely exploration of the mountains. The trail is largely shaded, alternating between stretches through woodland and refreshing breaks by the water’s edge. The sound of the water accompanies your walk, making for a particularly immersive and sensory experience.
The walk is particularly pleasant in spring and autumn: in spring, you can enjoy the lovely cool weather before the summer heat sets in, whilst in autumn the valley is bathed in magnificent shades of orange.
The Pas de l’Ours waterfall – our favourite spot
Along the walk, several waterfalls dot the route and offer spectacular views of the valley’s landscapes. Among them, the Pas de l’Ours waterfall catches the eye with its turbulent waters and wild surroundings. Its name comes from the bear’s paw print on the rock overlooking the waterfall.
Easily accessible from the footpath linking La Raillère to the Pont d’Espagne, it invites you to stop for a moment to admire the power of the water and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Whatever the season, this waterfall is one of the most remarkable along the waterfall trail.
