The village of Cauterets offers a wide range of landscapes and panoramasin the mid and high mountains. There are 3 lakes in Cauterets, all of which are accessible from the village. All accessible from the village, here are a few walks less than 2 hours away.

Lake Gaube
Round trip time: 2h15
Distance: 5.5km
Difference in altitude: 300m
Lac de Gaube is a must-see in the Cauterets valley. Perched at an altitude of over 1725 metres, it is accessible on foot from the village. From the Pont d’Espagne, access is by gondola or chairlift. This hike allows nature lovers to discover sumptuous landscapes alongside the Pyrenean peaks and to explore Lac de Gaube. With its postcard-perfect scenery, turquoise waters and beautiful valley, it’s always full of surprises.
Lake Ilhéou
Round trip time: 3h30
Distance: 10.5km
Difference in altitude: 600m
Lake Ilhéou, the emblematic lake of the Pyrenees, lies at an altitude of 1988 metres between Grand Barbat, Pic Arrouy and Pic de Courounalas. It is known as the blue lake because of its intense colour. You can fish here, or swim for the more adventurous. To get there, you have to leave from Cauterets. You can reach the lake on foot via the Cambasque valley or by using the Lys cable car and chairlift. It’s an easy hike and an ideal place for a family outing.

Difference in altitude: 456m
Situated in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park and fed by the waters of the Gave d’Estom-Soubiran, Lac d’Estom, at an altitude of 1,792 metres, is an easily accessible lake. It offers a unique landscape that will delight young and old alike. The walk from La Fruitière to the lake also offers the chance to spot a variety of animals, including isards and marmots, if you’re lucky. Renowned for its clear turquoise waters, the lake is an ideal place to recharge your batteries and enjoy the Lutour valley.
