At 3,298 metres, Le Vignemale is the highest peak in the French Pyrenees. Situated on the border with Spain, it dominates the Cauterets valley. Recognisable by its spectacular north face, visible from Lake Gaube, it epitomises the Pyrenean high mountains in all their grandeur.

the highest peak in the French Pyrenees

Every year, hikers, mountaineers and enthusiasts come to discover this legendary massif, which is both an exceptional natural site and a symbol of Pyreneanism. The Vignemale massif is home to the largest glacier in the French Pyrenees, the Ossoue glacier.

The site is accessible to all, even those who are not aiming for the summit:

  • From Lac de Gaube, you can enjoy a direct view of the north face of the Vignemale.
  • The Oulettes de Gaube refuge, at 2,151m, offers an exceptional view of the glacier and the Gaube couloir. It’s a 3-hour walk from the Pont d’Espagne. This is one of the most emblematic hikes in the Cauterets valley.

The Pont d’Espagne, easily accessible from Cauterets, is the ideal starting point for exploring the massif.

Access and routes from Cauterets

  • From Pont d’Espagne / Vallée de Gaube:
This is the classic route via Lac de Gaube and the Oulettes de Gaube refuge.
This is the historic ascent route, often completed in two days with an overnight stay in a refuge.
  • From the Ossoue dam: more direct access to the Ossoue glacier, for experienced hikers only.

The ascent of the Vignemale is a mountaineering route that requires good physical condition, suitable equipment (crampons, ice axe, ropes) and a good knowledge of the area; it can be undertaken with a mountain guide starting from Cauterets.

A mountain steeped in history

The Vignemale is also a place steeped in Pyrenean history.
In the 19th century, Count Henry Russell, an avid adventurer, had several caves dug in the area, symbolising his attachment to the massif.

These traces are a reminder that the Vignemale is as much a summit to climb as a heritage to preserve.

The Vignemale, Land of Mountaineering

The Vignemale is one of the most iconic peaks in the Pyrenees. Cauterets has been awarded the Terre d’Alpinisme label. This label is awarded to areas where mountaineering is a sporting activity, a culture and a living heritage.
